Happy Day of the Three Kings 2016

Happy Day of the Three Kings / Three Wise Men / Epiphany / Día de los Reyes!

In Mexico, we celebrate the biblical “three kings” on the 6th of January of every year. The celebration includes gifts for children (originally, Mexico only had the Wise Men, but we were lucky enough to grow up with both the Magic Kings AND Santa Claus!) and we spend time with family eating Rosca de Reyes, a yummy sweet bread made specifically for this holiday, served with Mexican Spiced Hot Chocolate.

The tradition might be big in Mexico, but the history surrounding it is obviously a world-wide phenomenon. During my trip to Cologne in May of 2014, I discovered that the impressive Cologne Cathedral is home to the Shrine of the Three Kings, consisting of three sarcophagi said to house the bones of the Three Wise Men. Two of the sarcophagi are side by side with the third on top; they are made of wood, but adorned with gold and silver, and over 1,000 jewels!
